Hilary Duff’s New Song ‘We Don’t Talk’ Appears to Be About Sister Haylie Duff Amid Rumored Rift

Hilary Duff got fans talking about her relationship with sister Haylie Duff as she kicked off her Small Rooms, Big Nerves tour in London on Monday, January 19.

The Lizzie McGuire star, 38, performed songs off her upcoming album, luck…or something , as she returned to the stage for the first time in nearly two decades.

Fans quickly began speculating that one song, “We Don’t Talk,” is a reference to her relationship with Haylie, 40.

“Don’t know when it happened / Not even sure what it was about,” Hilary sang. “’Cause we come from the same home, same blood.”

“People ask me how you’re doing / I wanna say amazing, but the truth is that I don’t know / What I always end up saying is how / We don’t talk, we don’t talk about it / We don’t talk about anything anymore.”

The song, which samples Gotye’s 2011 hit “Somebody That I Used to Know,” continues, “And if it’s ’cause you’re jealous / God knows I would sell it all, then break you off the bigger half.”

“Let’s have it out / I’ll hear you out, you’ll hear me out on the couch / Get back to how we were as kids / Let’s break it down / So sick of being so sad about / How we don’t talk and you won’t talk about it.”

Fans have speculated for years that there was drama between the sisters with some pointing to Hilary’s 2019 wedding to Matthew Koma as the first clue.

“She will have a wedding [because] she’s the good daughter that does, like, everything the way she’s supposed to,” Haylie told Us Weekly in December 2019. “I’m not really helping her plan. She’s planning her own little thing.”

While some fans felt Haylie’s comment bordered on “passive aggressive,” others noticed in 2023 that they had not “posted a picture together” in years.

Eagle-eyed fans also noticed that Haylie appeared to ‘like’ a post shared by The Cut featuring Ashley Tisdale’s recent essay, in which she discussed leaving a ‘toxic mom group,’ which many believed included Hilary and Mandy Moore.

“We have gone through a lot of the same things,” Hilary told Rolling Stone in November of her connection to her fans. “Whether that’s complicated relationships, anxiety, raising kids, divorces, trying to find yourself in adulthood, family drama … Finally, I felt safe enough and comfortable in my own family to step outside and open that part of myself up again.”
