Rita Wilson Shocks Fans by Revealing Massive Back Tattoo, Reveals It’s ‘Freeing’ to ‘Simply Be’

Rita Wilson still has a few surprises up her sleeves.

The acclaimed actress and singer, 69, shocked her followers with a Sunday, September 20 post on Instagram, in which she appeared to confirm she’s actually covered in tattoos.

Tom Hanks‘ wife took to social media to promote her new single, “Stranger with Age,” by sharing a photo of her bare back. In the image, a giant cross tattoo can clearly be seen, while she also rocked another piece on her upper arm. It’s unclear whether the ink is permanent or temporary.

“STRANGER WITH AGE? Who? Me? I’m lovin’ it! Who else is stranger with age? STRANGER WITH AGE song is out everywhere,” she captioned the post.

Further elaborating on the new song from the deluxe edition of her Sound of a Woman album, she wrote on Facebook, “The older I get, the more freeing it feels to let go of expectations and simply be….without the mental filters, the pretense, or worrying about what anyone else might think.”

The Now and Then star added, “‘Stranger With Age’ is about embracing that freedom and all the wonderfully strange parts of ourselves. Just one more day. ❤️.”

Fans were loving the post, including a number of celebrities.

Julianne Moore left a string of heart emojis in the comments, while Reese Witherspoon exclaimed, “Love this!”

Jewel added, “Well go sis!,” while Brandi Carlile added, “What an absolute boss 🔥❤️🙌” and Jessica Simpson wrote, “Beautiful ❤️.”

Former MTV VJ Daisy Fuentes, meanwhile, commented, “And also more powerful & more beautiful with age 💥,” before Ali Larter added, “Love!”

Wilson opened up about her appreciation for tattoos while speaking with The Cut at the Grammy Awards earlier this year, noting at the time that her son, Chet Hanks, is covered with them.

“I recently met a tattoo artist and when I grew up, anyone who had a tattoo, they were a ‘thug,’ they were a bad guy, they went to jail,” she told the outlet. “I was talking to this tattoo artist and she said, ‘When people come to me, they want to put tattoos on their body that really show you who they are so you get to know them.'”

“So now when I look at somebody’s tattoo, I look at them in a different way,” she added at the time. Wilson has not, however, commented further on her own ink.
