Before there was Downton Abbey, there was The Forsyte Saga, an immensely successful 1967 BBC2 series. Based on John Galsworthy’s Nobel Prize–winning books, it chronicles four generations of a nouveau riche Victorian family as they try to establish their upper-class bona fides.

In this sumptuous remake, Francesca Annis stars as matriarch Ann Forsyte, a less acid version of Downton’s Dowager Countess. Her good-hearted son, Jo Forsyte (Danny Griffin), heir to the family stockbroker business, is being steamrolled by his aggressive, cutthroat cousin Soames (Joshua Sorpin). The enthralling story, great performances and gorgeous costumes and sets make this a must-see for Masterpiece fans.
