Cher Baffles Audience at 2026 Grammys After Naming Luther Vandross as Winner of Record of the Year

Cher seemingly had an off night at the 2026 Grammys when she took the stage to present Record of the Year.

The “Strong Enough” singer, 79, turned the ceremony’s final moments into unexpected chaos when she took the stage and briefly appeared ready to exit before the category was even announced. Host Trevor Noah presented the Mermaids star with the Lifetime Achievement Award while she was up there and she seemingly forgot that she was supposed to announce the winner of the Record of the Year category.

Cameras caught the moment when Cher looked visibly confused and Noah, 41, had to coax her back on stage.

“Cher, before you go, could we get you to announce the nominees?” Noah called as she began to leave the stage.

When the Witches of Eastwick actress resumed her remarks, she mistakenly named the late Luther Vandross as the winner before eventually correcting herself.

“No, Kendrick Lamar!” Cher shouted.

Lamar, 38, and SZA won for their hit song “Luther.”

The “Not Like Us” rapper leaned into the joke when he accepted the award and asked the audience to “give it up for the late, great Luther Vandross.”

Social media quickly lit up with reactions to Cher’s onstage mixup.

“Cher when Luther Vandross didn’t walk on stage to accept the award,” one person wrote via X, while another added, “I know Cher did not just say Luther Vandross.”

Cher has yet to publicly address the mixup.
