Amanda Peet Reveals She Was Diagnosed With Breast Cancer While Both Parents Were in Hospice
In an emotional essay published in The New Yorker, Amanda Peet revealed she was diagnosed with breast cancer — while both her parents were in hospice on opposite coasts over Labor Day last year. Admitting she resorted to “little chips of Ativan” to deal with the initial shock, the Your Friends & Neighbors star, 54, had no time to process the news before she had to fly to New York to be with her dying father. “I felt guilty for not crying,” she wrote. “But at least I got a reprieve from guessing how much longer I had to live.”
Back home in L.A. she waited to tell her two older kids until more tests confirmed her cancer was stage 1. “Molly cried, and Frankie — FaceTiming from her college quad — kept her hand over her mouth and kept it there until she was able to process the excellent portion of the news: That it appeared I was stage 1 and wasn’t going to need chemo.” Amanda had her first clear scan in January. Days later, her mom died.
