Selena Gomez Explains Why Benny Blanco Wouldn’t Have Liked Her Years Ago: ‘I Was All Over the Place’

According to Selena Gomez, she and Benny Blanco found love at the perfect time.

In an interview with Allure, published on September 9, the Only Murders in the Building star, 32, opened up about her personal evolution prior to falling for Blanco, who she had known — and worked with — for years before the pair began dating in 2023.

“I don’t think I would have been remotely mature enough,” Gomez told the outlet when asked if she was glad sparks flew between her and the record producer, 36, when they did.

“It’s weird to think that only five years ago I wouldn’t have been in the right place, but I’ve learned so many lessons [since then] that led me to being the best partner I could be for Benny,” she shared. “And I believe the same with him.”

Gomez’s tumultuous on-again, off-again relationship with Justin Bieber lasted from 2010 to 2018. The “Peaches” singer, 31, went on to marry Hailey Bieber, with whom he shares son Jack, 1.

The Wizards of Waverly Place alum admits Blanco — who produced her songs “Same Old Love” and “Single Soon” — wishes they got together sooner.

“He’ll say, ‘Gosh, why did we waste so much time?’ And I always say, ‘You wouldn’t have liked me back then,'” Gomez dished. “I was all over the place.”

Still, the “Fetish” singer acknowledges that her difficult past shaped her into being the ideal person for her fiance, who she describes as “one of the most grounding people” in her life.

“I’ve learned so many lessons [since then] that led me to being the best partner I could be for Benny,” she shared. “And I believe the same with him.”

The loved-up couple, who announced their engagement in December 2024, are reportedly set to wed sometime this month — though guests won’t know the location until the day of the event, per TMZ.
