Miley Cyrus recently addressed why she hasn’t toured in so long, revealing that a medical condition has made it difficult for her.

The 32-year-old singer-songwriter, who hasn’t embarked on a world tour since Bangerz about 10 years ago, sat down for an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, posted Wednesday, May 21. The “Flowers” hitmaker said a significant factor in her not hitting the road is the physical toll it takes on her, as she has a vocal disorder called Reinke’s edema, which she described as “abuse of the vocal cords.”

“I have this very large polyp on my vocal cord, which has given me a lot of the tone and the texture that has made me who I am, but it’s extremely difficult to perform with because it’s like running a marathon with ankle weights on,” Cyrus revealed.

The former Disney star also noted that touring is a “business,” not a free endeavor.

“If I can’t play a certain amount of shows, it doesn’t actually mathematically make any sense to do it,” she stated.

However, that’s not to say that the Grammy winner doesn’t have the desire to perform live for her fans.

“My whole team sitting in the other room can tell you I put a tour together like every other week ’cause I want to do it, but it would have to be in a way that is sustainable for me in all the ways that we talked about,” she remarked. “Also, with what I’ve got going on, like I don’t lip-sync, I sing live, and these songs are big.”

The “Slide Away” vocalist added that she has a potential plan to tour her upcoming album, but it would not be easy to pull off.

“There was an idea that I had called Somewhere Beautiful, and it was the next step to Something Beautiful, and it was performing in intimate places that are filled with beauty and inviting my fans to have this moment because it’s something that you can’t find in the stadium,” she admitted. “But you know, getting people to a cathedral, you know, in the middle of like a forest that is not set up for sound… I just need have someone help me make it happen.”

For now, fans can look forward to Cyrus’ visual album Something Beautiful, which will be released on Friday, May 30.
