Disgraced newsman Matt Lauer was spotted at the Hamptons Classic on Sunday, August 27, with his wife Annette Roque. It was the first time they’d been pictured since he was accused of sexual assault and harassment by multiple NBC coworkers.
The Hamptons Classic is an outdoor horse show, and the Lauers attend every year. In 2017, their daughter Romy Lauer competed. Of course, Matt attended that show under very different circumstances.
Matt, 60, and Annette, 51, seemed friendly at Sunday’s event. He wore khakis, a blue shirt, and his Yankees hat. hiding behind sunglasses, he was probably hoping to go unnoticed. Annette wore a red floral top, but also seemed to be going incognito under a large hat and with sunglasses. Their kids — Romy, Jack, and Thijs — didn’t seem to be with them.
Both Matt and Annette greeted friends and munched on hot dogs. It was a rather warm reception for the former Today show host.
He was fired from Today in November 2017 after NBC received a complaint from a colleague about an incident that took place during the Sochi Winter Olympics. He publicly apologized, saying “There are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain I have caused others by words and actions. To the people I have hurt, I am truly sorry. … As I am writing this I realized the depth of the damage and disappointment I have left behind at home and at NBC.” He claimed not all the stories were true, but some were. More allegations quickly followed.
By December, it was clear that Annette was going to divorce him. Her father Henri told reporters, “I have no words for her husband. What he has done is bad. Everybody feels betrayed. She is not going to stay with him and work it out. They are not together trying to work it out.”
According to reports, Annette is getting $20 million in the divorce settlement.
The couple married in 1998, but this isn’t the first time they’ve separated. In 2006 she filed for divorce claiming “mental abuse, extreme mental and emotional distress, humiliation, torment and anxiety,” because of Matt’s cheating. She eventually pulled the filing.
The former host has been quiet since his firing, except for one interview he gave to a New Zealand Radio station. He’s currently fighting with that country over the use of land he owns there. He claimed he was being victimized because the scandal made him an “easy mark.”
It’s not known if Matt is planning to attempt to return to television.
