Princess Kate honored the royal women who came before her during a white-tie state banquet held at Windsor Castle on September 17.
Nod to Queen Elizabeth II
The couture ensemble Kate wore to the dinner — a hand-embroidered champagne gold Chantilly lace evening coat over a silk crepe gown — was made by U.K. bridal and eveningwear designer Phillipa Lepley. It was a clear callback to the lacy metallic dress her late grandmother-in-law Queen Elizabeth II wore nearly 22 years earlier for a state dinner honoring another White House couple, President George W. Bush and first lady Laura Bush, at Buckingham Palace during their official state visit.

The Queen Mary Lover’s Knot tiara was also one of late mother-in-law Princess Diana’s favorites. The diamond and pearl creation, crafted in 1914 by jeweler Garrard for Queen Mary, has been Kate’s choice 13 times since she joined the royal family in 2011.

Kate wore the late queen’s Diamond Orbital Pendant Earrings, which are valued at more than $135K. She also donned the cross, star and blue sash signifying her position as a Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order — an honor bestowed upon her by the monarch, who died in 2022 — as well as Elizabeth’s Royal Family Order on a yellow ribbon pinned to her bodice.
Respect For The King
The princess also wore her Royal Family Order of King Charles III badge, which features a miniature portrait of her father-in-law, pinned atop a pale blue ribbon.
