Princess Kate is going on her first solo trip in nearly three years.
Buckingham Palace announced that the future queen will travel to Reggio Emilia in northern Italy next week for a working visit with The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, as reported by journalist Dan Wootton on his Outspoken Substack on Wednesday, May 6. The trip marks her first official foreign tour since her cancer battle.
The visit is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, May 13 and 14 — and it carries enormous significance. Kate, 44, hasn’t been on an official trip abroad since visiting France for the Rugby World Cup in October 2023, per the report.

In March 2024, the mom of three announced she had been diagnosed with cancer, and the grueling health crisis left royal insiders questioning whether she would ever return to a full work schedule, Wootton reported.
The physical and mental toll was that severe, according to the journalist, but he added that a “soft re-entry to working royal life has ushered in a far more confident Catherine” — one who is keenly aware of what her role demands and what matters most to her.
That renewed focus is showing up in deliberate ways. Rather than letting designer outfits dominate the conversation, the princess has been steering the spotlight toward the causes she champions, per the report.
The trip to Italy also brings built-in momentum for the royal family. King Charles and Queen Camilla recently wrapped a widely praised visit to the United States, and Wootton predicted that Kate’s solo tour will become “one of the biggest news stories in the world next week.”
