The story is told from a young girl’s perspective as she experienced the horrors of the Khmer Rouge regime’s genocide of about 2 million Cambodians.

42-year-old Angelina co-wrote the screenplay for the movie with long-time friend Loung Ung, who penned the book of the same title in. This is the fourth film Angelina has directed, and many are calling it her best directorial work to date.

Perhaps that’s because the story is near and dear to Angelina’s heart. Cambodia is the birthplace of her son Maddox Jolie-Pitt. According to Angelina, she waited to write and direct First They Killed My Father until Maddox was old enough to handle it.

The Netflix produced film made its North American premier at the Telluride Film Festival, which Angelina attended with all six of her children. After being well received by critics and attendees at the festival Angelina was able to relax and enjoy a break from the constant questions she’s been fielding about her divorce from actor Brad Pitt, 53.

Hopefully now that First They Killed My Father has been well received and the drama of her divorce and custody battles has died down, perhaps Angelina will be able to focus on her health.
