George Clooney isn’t holding back when discussing his past.
In a new Esquire profile published on Monday, October 6, the ER alum confessed that in 1982, he tried drugs, including “blow and stuff.”
“I used to make jokes about how I did too many drugs, but the truth is, it was never a big issue for me at all,” he told the outlet. “And look, there was an episode of Taxi where they’re all doing blow.”
“At the time, it was like, ‘No, this is not like heroin. It’s not addictive.’ But then it was like, ‘Oh, well, it’s actually pretty fng bad,’” he continued. “Plus, it was all cut with mannitol. The baby laxative. Everybody would do a line and then take a s.”

Esquire shared that Clooney tried marijuana once when he made pot brownies with his friends 15 years prior. During the experience, the group had watched the 1939 classic, The Wizard of Oz, and listened to the Pink Floyd rock album Dark Side of the Moon.
“We were fed. I literal — I think all of us — there was like 20 of us in the screening room, and the movie ended, and we sat there without speaking for, like, hours. Hours!” the Golden Globe winner recalled. “Like the sun was coming up and we’re — it’s just not my drug.”
As for alcohol, Clooney – who is part owner of the Casamigos tequila brand alongside businessman Rande Gerber – is partial to the liquor.
“I’ve had periods where I wouldn’t say it was a problem — I never woke up and drank or anything,” he dished. “But I’d have runs where I’d get pretty toasty every night.”

The Syriana actor then recalled that he got a bit tipsy at the 2025 Tony Awards afterparty earlier this summer while celebrating his role as Edward R. Murrow in the play Good Night, and Good Luck.
“I got blasted,” he admitted. “Barely-walking drunk, you know? Came home with [my wife] Amal, and I was just laughing. We’re lying in bed, and I go, ‘Well, I caught up for all my abstinence in one night.’ I was sick all day the next day; it was hysterical. I was like high school drunk. Like, dumba** drunk.”
Clooney had been nominated at the time for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play, however he lost out on the golden statuette when Cole Escola won for their role in the play Oh, Mary!
