Nine years later, and we finally know how Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) met “The Mother” (we also now know that her name is Tracy McConnell). The highly anticipated finale of How I Met Your Mother got mixed fan reaction, though, with many loyal viewers upset about how things turned out.
Although all of season nine was a lead up to Barney’s (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin’s (Cobie Smulders) wedding, shortly into the finale, we find out they divorce three years later. This leads Barney back to his old, womanizing ways, but there’s closure, and he does find the love of his life — his daughter, Ellie, the result of a one-night-stand. Robin, on the other hand, loses touch with the group due to her busy, traveling schedule.
Meanwhile, Marshall (Jason Segel) and Lily (Alyson Hannigan) end up with three kids, and he finally gets a judge position after turning it down in 2014.
Of course, it’s Ted’s story that’s the most complicated. After having two kids, he and Tracy (Cristin Milioti) finally decide to get married after five years together. Then, as many theories predicted, she gets sick and passes away, six years before he tells the lengthy story to their kids. In the end, his daughter, Penny, points out that the point of the story wasn’t to explain how he met their mother…but to get their permission to ask out “Aunt Robin.”
Eventually, that’s what Ted does, showing up outside her apartment with that legendary french horn that he stole for her on their first date. Full circle!
