Now, here’s the kicker: No parents on either side of the family were invited, and apparently, Tom Cruise was just fine staying on his side of the pond while Bella tied the knot with her fiance Max Parker on Sept. 18 this year in London.

The 22-year-old hairstylist and Max, a British I.T. consultant, meant it when they said they wanted a tiny event—just a handful of friends.

Tom was reportedly so chill with the decision, that he went ahead and picked up the entire wedding tab. Despite it being a small get-together, the pair managed to pick a swanky place for the event—a fancy conference room at the Dorchester hotel loaded with flowers.

While some murmur has been going around about Tom’s cool nature about not walking his daughter down the aisle, some reports claim that he may not be a big fan of Bella’s new hubby—who isn’t a Scientologist—but that seems unlikely since Max and Bella reportedly cozied up at Tom’s place for Thanksgiving and Christmas last year.

Perhaps the other reason Tom has been rather inviting to the newest family member is because of Tom’s own uncertainly about the religion anymore.

Along with Bella, Tom’s son Connor, are still devoted Scientologists. “Even though it would break his heart, Tom is prepared for them to distance themselves from him as soon as he splits from the church,” the insider says. “Of course, he’s hoping they’ll leave with him. He’s hinted at the idea, but they won’t acknowledge the possibility of giving up their faith.”

Tom recently realized, according to Star’s sources, that his involvement with the church has not only caused his divorces (Mimi Rogers in 1990, Nicole Kidman in 2001 and Katie Holmes in 2012), but has also weakened his relationship with his youngest daughter, Suri, whom he shares with Katie.

“The buzz in Tom’s camp is that he’s finally ready to say goodbye,” a source told Star earlier this summer in July. “It’s been a long time coming, and he doesn’t think it will be easy, but he is absolutely determined to see this through and make a clean start.”

He’s also been testing the waters. For years, Tom has gone everywhere with at least one handler from the church, and when he’s not with them, he regularly calls them. “Recently though, Tom has taken a step back from checking in with Scientology officials for a few days,” the source reveals. “Rumor has it they go searching for him.”
