When a marriage takes a turn for the worse, nothing helps resuscitate the romance like a kids-free vacation. Insiders say that’s just what Reese Witherspoon and her husband, Jim Toth, were planning when they bought plane tickets to Naples, Italy, for Sept. 27; they were hoping to spend 10 days re-creating the passion of their 2011 honeymoon in Positano.

"Reese freaked out once she realized that they were flying out on their son's birthday," a source tells Star. Jim tried everything to convince the 39-year-old actress that the kids—including Ava, 16, and Deacon, 11—would be all right.

"Tennessee was only turning 3, so he wouldn't have remembered much anyway," the pal explains. "Jim even suggest celebrating the day before, but Reese refused and canceled the entire trip."

Needless to say, Jim, 45, wasn't happy. "They really needed to put some time aside to work on their relationship, and Jim thought Italy would be where he and Reese could finally reconnect," says the source, adding that the Hollywood agent was "devastated" by the abrupt cancellation.
