Justin Bieber opened up about his controversial past in an emotional and candid Instagram post. The Canadian superstar reflected on how his past as a child star and history of “heavy” drug use has affected his mental health. The post comes just weeks before his first wedding anniversary with Hailey Baldwin. The couple are set to renew their vows in a religious wedding later this month.

Then Justin explained how he thinks being a child star affected his development. “There is an insane pressure and responsibility put on a child whose brain, emotions, [and] frontal lobes … aren’t developed yet,” he explained, writing that his “whole world was flipped on its head” when he became famous.

“I went from a 13-year-old boy from a small town to being praised left and right by the world,” Justin said. “Everyone did everything for me so I never even learned the fundamentals of responsibility.”

“By this point I was 18 with no skills in the real world, with millions of dollars and access to whatever I wanted. This is a very scary concept for anyone. By 20 I made every bad decision you could have thought [of] and went from one of the most loved and adored people in the world to the most ridiculed, judged and hated person in the world!” the “Mistletoe” singer explained.

“I started doing pretty heavy duty drugs at 19 and abused all my relationships,” he confessed. “I became resentful, disrespectful to women, and angry. I become distant to everyone who loved me.” He said that, in the end, he was “a shell of a person.”
