Jennifer Lawrence believes she lost out on a major role to fellow actress Margot Robbie because she was “not pretty enough.”
The Hunger Games actress, 35, appeared on the Monday, January 12, episode of Josh Horowitz‘s Happy Sad Confused podcast, where they discussed Lawrence wanting to work with director Quentin Tarantino. Lawrence admitted that she had her chance to work with him on The Hateful Eight, but turned it down.
“Which I should not have done,” she joked.
Lawrence claimed that Tarantino, 62, wanted her for the role of Sharon Tate in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, alleging “then everybody was like, ‘she’s not pretty enough to play Sharon Tate.’”

“I’m pretty sure it is true,” said Lawrence, per People. “Or it’s that thing where I’ve been telling the story for so long that way, I believe it. I’m pretty sure that’s true, or he just never was considering me for the part and the internet just went out of its way to call me ugly.”
Robbie, 35, ended up playing Tate. In 2017, the late actress’ sister, Debra Tate, told TMZ that the Barbie star was her preferred choice. Ahead of the film’s release in 2019, Debra said she believed Robbie had a look similar to that of her sister, and noted that, although she’s got nothing against Lawrence, “she’s not pretty enough to play Sharon.”
“That’s a horrible thing to say, but I have my standards,” she said at the time.

However, it turns out that Tarantino wasn’t actually considering Lawrence for Tate — instead, he wanted her to play a member of the Manson Family, Squeaky Fromme, who was ultimately portrayed by Dakota Fanning.
On the June 28, 2021 episode of the WTF with Marc Maron podcast, he explained that he invited Lawrence to his house to read the script. “She was interested in doing it, but then it didn’t work out,” Tarantino concluded. “She’s a very nice person and I like her, I respect her as an actress.”
