Carmen Electra is looking back at her time dating late music icon Prince.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly published Friday, June 19, the model, 54, said it’s no surprise that his 1995 song “I Hate U” off his 17th studio album, The Gold Experience, is about her after their breakup.

Still, Electra looks back fondly on their time together.

“I remember all the good times, you know,” she told the publication. “We went through definitely some hard times together, but now I hear all the music, even the song that was written about me that everyone knows is written about me, called ‘I Hate U.'”

The “Purple Rain” singer discovered the Scary Movie actress and produced her 1993 self-titled debut studio album. The two had a relatively private relationship but were no longer together by 1995.

Looking back on “I Hate U,” Electra said, “I actually have always loved that song because he’s really saying, ‘I love you. That’s why I hate you. I hate you so I love you.’ You know what I mean?”

“It just is so deep to me, because I think it’s probably the first time he publicly said ‘I love you’ to me,” she added. “He kind of hid me a lot because he didn’t want people to think we were dating and that’s how I got my record deal. So I was kind of kept a little bit more away. That’s why you don’t see a lot of pictures of us together.”

Electra explained that the two were “very in love with each other.” However, when they first met, Electra said that she actually didn’t want to date Prince.

“Eventually,” she explained, “I saw through everything and fell deeply in love with him. You know, he’s writing music for me, writing songs about me that were really sweet and beautiful. He was very romantic.”

Prince died on April 21, 2016, at age 57 after accidentally overdosing on counterfeit hydrocodone/paracetamol pills that were laced with fentanyl.

Electra was married twice: briefly to Dennis Rodman in 1998, before it was annulled, and to Dave Navarro from 2003 to 2007.
