Olivia Wilde is opening up about her and ex Jason Sudeikis realized their nearly decade-long relationship had reached its end.
Wilde, 42, appeared on the Wednesday, June 17 episode of Call Her Daddy, where she discussed her past relationships, including her long-term partnership with Sudeikis, the father of her two children, son Otis, 12, and daughter Daisy, 9.
The actress recalled the specific exchange that made it clear their relationship could no longer be salvaged.
“Jason and I had been having a rough time for a while. We had a real bumpy, bumpy ride,” Wilde recalled.
The Don’t Worry Darling director said the pair were driving home from a birthday party her friends threw for her on March 10, 2020, when she asked Sudeikis whether he had bought her a gift.
“He said, ‘What would I get you, Olivia? I don’t know you,'” Wilde recalled.
“And he wasn’t wrong. We didn’t know each other anymore,” Wilde added.
“That was when we realized it was over,” she said.
Wilde said the revelation inspired her to make her new film, The Invite, in which she stars alongside Seth Rogen. The movie centers on a married couple struggling in their relationship.
“You can get to a place in a relationship where you stop engaging in the knowing of each other and the curiosity about each other, and you find yourself in a place where you’re like, ‘I don’t even know you,'” Wilde explained.

Looking back on the breakup, Wilde called it “[expletive] tough.”
“It brought us to a place of, ‘OK, this is done, we’re gonna end this.'”
Two days later, the world shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic, and the former couple continued living with their children under the same roof.
These days, the two coparent.
“Once you are sharing custody with someone, it shifts the way you think about parenting. I really value the opportunity to be completely present with them and then to hand them off to a very capable coparent who is very present with them when he’s with them.”
“We are always our best with our kids. They get the best of us,” she added.
