Fans roared their approval when Giuliana Rancic arrived to the Golden Globe Awards, but those cheers quickly turned to gasps when the E! News host took off her coat.
“You could see the bones protruding from her shoulder and back,” said one shocked fan. “She has that lollipop head thing happening, because her body is like a stick.”
By the time Giuliana changed into a strapless pink Maria Lucia Hohan mermaid gown to interview celebrity arrivals, worried fans were blowing up her Instagram account. “Skin and bones skeleton in a night dress,” wrote one follower.
“People are concerned please take care of yourself!!” another alarmed fan wrote after Giuliana posted a row of diamond bracelets that were almost falling off her tiny wrist. “Please eat. i love you but I felt really uncomfortable watching you.” It was a sentiment shared by many, as Giuliana, who’s thinning frame has long been a concern for friends and fans, now appears to have reached an all-time low.
Health and beauty consultant Alicia Hunter estimates Giuliana’s weight at 98 lbs. — way below the 130 to 170 lbs. experts say a 5’9″ woman should carry. The reason for her low weight is plain enough, as she once documented her typical day of dieting adds up to only 850 calories. “With her body fat percentage below the healthy range, she’s at risk for low energy, hair loss and bone density loss,” Hunter explains.
Depsite what appears to be a deficient diet, Giuliana has hit back at cyberbullies who criticize her weight online. “I know the truth,” she has said. “I know that I eat a lot and I take walks and I have a faster metabolism.”
That kind of disconnect is the hallmark of eating disorders, and Massachusetts-based psychotherapist Karen Ruskin, who does not treat Giuliana, thinks it could be related to both her battle with breast cancer in 2011 and 2012 and her struggle with fertility. “It is not uncommon for women who have had trouble getting pregnant or suffered from an illness to have a negative relationship with food to the point where they are afraid to put things in their body,” says Ruskin, who adds that it would be an “enormous” help if Bill Rancic confronted his wife, because “a significant other plays an important role in the health and well-being of someone who is struggling with an eating disorder.”
Giuliana may soon have trouble, with not only what she puts in her body, but also what she puts on it. According to insiders, she’s becoming so skinny that it’s becoming hard for designers to dress the Fashion Police star. “The awards season has been tough on Giuliana because designers aren’t jumping at the chance to dress her as usual,” says a well-placed fashion source. “She has to tailor her dresses so much that they’re ruined afterward, and the designers are upset.”
