Things are just going right for Reese Witherspoon these days. Following a 2013 disorderly conduct arrest, the actress has reclaimed her image and remains focused on family, friends and work.
The 38-year-old recently landed one of the most notable roles of her career, starring as former drug addict Cheryl Strayed in Wild, a part for which she’s already receiving Oscar buzz. “I was scared of the really emotional scenes,” she admits to Glamour. “I was scared of the sexuality. I was scared of the grittiness and of being bare on screen. It’s not just about having no makeup on your face, like I did in the film; it’s about not being conscious of how you’re perceived, allowing yourself to be broken, the way she did so fearlessly in the book.”
Luckily, when the tough filming finished for the day, Reese had a husband and family to go back to. “I have to say, a very healing part of my life is my wonderful husband, Jim,” she gushes. “It’s really wonderful being with someone who supports me, who loves me, who is my number-one fan. That is such an incredible experience. You have to be ready for those things. I had to be in a place where I felt all those things about myself.”
And before she found that comfort in Jim, the Legally Blonde star had a slew of friends, including some fellow A-Listers, to lean onto. “I am so, so lucky to have girlfriends who, when I was on the floor crying, upset about things that happened in my life, came over, stood me up, put me in the shower, put my clothes on, took my kids to school, brought me dinner,” she explains. “You know? I love my girlfriends, and I protect those relationships fiercely.”
