Both Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth have admitted to being “happy” since announcing their split in September, but neither of the young stars have really opened up about the breakup. But when you’re one of Barbara Walters’ Most Fascinating People of the Year…it’s kind of time to spill some deets!
This year, the “Wrecking Ball” singer makes the journalist’s Top 10 list. In a preview for the special, she gets candid while talking about her relationship, which began on the set of The Last Song in 2009, led to a 2012 engagement, and eventual breakup a year later.
Miley made headlines many a-time in 2013, mostly for her drastic image change and over-the-top performances. But the 21-year-old admits that that change was nothing compared to what she went through in her relationship. “I was so scared of being alone, and I think, conquering that fear, this year, was actually bigger than any other transition that I had this entire year,” she admitted. “I don’t ever want to have to need someone again, where you feel like, without them, you can’t be yourself.”
The singer added that she now realizes she was much to young to be getting engaged when Liam popped the question, but she has no regrets. “I don’t think I realized what 19 truly is,” she explained, “and I got engaged at 19, and I definitely wouldn’t change being engaged. But now, I just feel like I can actually be happy.”
So where does she stand on marriage in the future? “I think I’ll want that in the times that it needs to be,” she said.
