America watched stunned last June as a tearful Ann Curry announced her involuntary departure from the Today show, refusing a kiss on the cheek from her cohost Matt Lauer on her way out. But now, with the show’s ratings having plummeted since the infamous Curry saga, Star can exclusively reveal that the same NBC execs who ousted her after little over a year as cohost are ready to beg Ann to return!
“They’re dying to get her back,” says an insider. “They’re trying to meet with Ann to make her an offer she can’t refuse – they realize their decision to fire her was a huge mistake.”
Ann originally got the boot after Today lost a 16-year ratings edge over its biggest competitor, ABC’s Good Morning America. But it turned out that firing the beloved 56-year-old anchor only made things worse, angering fans and causing the show’s worst publicity in 60 years.
Now NBC is asking Ann to help clean up its mess, but insiders doubt that winning her back will be easy. While Ann stayed with the network after the firing, she already tried to decamp for CNN in January, but her rumored current salary of $10 million won’t make her loyalty easy to buy. “I don’t think money will be her deciding factor,” says the source. “NBC shouldn’t get its hopes up.”
