The Summer I Turned Pretty’s Christopher Briney and Gavin Casalegno Recall Prank That Went ‘Too Far’

Christopher Briney and Gavin Casalegno may play brothers on The Summer I Turned Pretty — but their onscreen sibling rivalry doesn’t stop once cameras go down.

On Tuesday, July 15, the actors — who play Conrad and Jeremiah Fisher in the romantic drama series — appeared alongside their co-star, Lola Tung, on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon where they dished on their offscreen relationship.

“I think there’s moments we love each other and moments we hate each other,” Briney, 27, told Fallon. “We’ve had our fun, and I think we’ve taken moments a little too far.”

One instance involved Briney and their costar Sean Kaufman, who plays Steven Conklin, stealing Casalegno’s vehicle while filming for season 2 was underway. “We went and took his keys, and then we hid it — and it’s a big lot,” he shared of the prank, noting the cast are given rental vehicles during filming. “We hid it, and then he came out, and we were like, ‘Oh, I don’t know where your car is, man.'”

As to how Briney and Kaufman, 25, got Casalegno’s keys in the first place, the two jokesters swiped them while he was in a wardrobe fitting.

“We pretended we were coming to say hi, and then Sean distracted him and gave him a hug, and I grabbed his keys,” the Mean Girls actor admitted.

However, Casalegno, 25, didn’t let the prank play out easily.

“I did everything in my power. I pretty much raised hell. I was like, ‘I’m gonna get my car back,'” he recalled. “I was, like, trying to meet up with my friends and surf, and then all of a sudden, my car’s gone. I’m just like, ‘What?’ I immediately knew it was them.”

Casalegno explained that he kicked back on the roof of Briney’s car in an effort to stop him from leaving: “My thought process was, if I couldn’t go home, then Chris can’t go home.”

However, when that didn’t work, Casalegno tried to “guilt trip” Briney into returning his keys.

“So this is when the bit got too far, and I just was like, You know what? If I can’t go home, I need food, and I don’t have my wallet because it’s in the car,” Casalegno explained. “So I ran as fast as I could to the nearest gas station to get some food and drinks because I was just so thirsty.”

The late-night host, 50, shared a hilarious clip of Casalegno sprinting to the gas station, with Briney and Kaufman following him in the car.

Watching Casalegno go to extreme lengths to beat them to the gas station inspired Briney to end the prank, with him explaining: “Just get in the car, we’re going to give you your keys back.”

Eventually, Casalegno’s keys were returned.
