Serena Williams has faced plenty of opponents across the net, but the latest pushback is coming from an unexpected court — social media.
The retired tennis icon took to X on Sunday, April 27 to share a parenting moment involving her eldest daughter, Olympia, 8, that quickly turned into a polarizing celebrity confession. Williams revealed that after Olympia refused to go to bed, she revoked her sleepover privileges — and the fallout was emotional for both of them.
“I told my daughter to go to bed. She did not therefore, she missed out on her sleep over,” Williams, 44, posted. “She cried. But what she did not know is I cried harder. I hate when she cries. Discipline sucks. But sometimes it’s important.”

What the 23-time Grand Slam champion likely intended as a relatable parenting moment divided her followers.
“This isn’t healthy parenting,” criticized one commenter. “It’s called being right by force. It doesn’t teach a child how to self soothe or regulate or understand their emotions.”
“Did you give her any grace as to why she didn’t sleep?” asked another, who called it “bad parenting.”
But not everyone was swinging at Williams, who has been married to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian since November 2017.

“That’s real parenting right there loving them enough to be firm even when it hurts you more. One day she’ll understand,” wrote one, while another assured her, “you are raising her well.”
“The greatest athlete of all time broken by a bedtime,” summarized another, who noted that “motherhood is humbling…”
Williams retired from professional tennis in 2022 and has since shifted her focus to expanding her business ventures and spending more time with her growing family. She and Ohanian, 43, also share younger daughter Adira, who was born in August 2023.
