Spencer Grammer has turned a traumatic event into a new career.
In 2020, the 42-year-old actress and daughter of Kelsey Grammer was stabbed through the hand while attempting to break up a fight outside a restaurant in New York City. Despite surgery, she was left with a severed tendon and nerve damage.
“I really have never gotten full feeling back,” the Rick & Morty voice actress shared in an interview with People published October 6, 2026. “It’s about a 20 percent chance that you will when you have a severe nerve injury.”
“Actually, every person should really pick up an instrument because it’s great for your brain health, for your neuroplasticity,” she told the outlet, revealing that a guitar was her instrument of choice. “And also that’s where your nerves heal from, from your brain outward.”

Spencer also began writing music and, in 2025, formed the folk-rock duo Belle and Chain. In April 2026, they released their first single, “Don’t You Worry Babe,” while their follow-up track, “Laila,” dropped September 24.
Per the band’s website, the actress has since “discovered that playing and singing was a powerful way to process that trauma and rebuild confidence” following the stabbing.
“More doors have opened for me playing music than it has been for acting for a while,” said Spencer, who last voiced a character on the Hulu series Solar Opposites from 2022 to 2023 and appeared opposite her dad in the 2022 holiday movie The 12 Days of Christmas Eve.
“I think when you suffer a pretty traumatic event … it definitely changed me as a person and music became more aligned with my soul, in a way,” the performer explained.
“I just really love to play music and to hopefully convey to people that even if you have a tragedy, [and] you don’t have feeling in your right hand, or even if people tell you you’re too old to do something or are limiting you in any way that it inspires people to pick up an instrument or do the thing that they always wanted to do,” she concluded.
Belle and Chain will hit the road later this month in the U.K., before performances in Michigan, Illinois and Ohio in November. They’re also planning an album release in early 2027.
