After spending a week in the U.K., Prince Harry arrived in Kyiv for his second surprise visit to war-torn Ukraine this year — but he had to get permission first.
“I had to check with my wife and the British government to make sure it was OK,” the Duke of Sussex told The Guardian of wife Meghan Markle while riding an overnight train to the city.
Harry, 40, was seen arriving on a train dubbed the “Superroyal-Express” in a video posted on Instagram by Ukraine Railways on Friday, September 12.
He told the newspaper that he and members of his Invictus Foundation had come to work on new initiatives to support members of the military who have been wounded in the three-year conflict.

“We cannot stop the war but what we can do is do everything we can to help the recovery process,” he told The Guardian.
“We can continue to humanize the people involved in this war and what they are going through,” he added. “We have to keep it in the forefront of people’s minds. I hope this trip will help to bring it home to people because it’s easy to become desensitized to what has been going on.”
Ukraine is one of the nations bidding to host the Invictus Games in 2029.
Back in April, Harry visited a trauma center in Lviv. “In Lviv, you don’t see much of the war. It is so far west. This is the first time we will see the real destruction of the war,” he told The Guardian.
On April 12, Meghan posted a video on Instagram showing their kids, Archie, 6, and Lilibet, 4, digging into a cake — “a special gift Papa brought from Ukraine.”

The prince’s most recent visit occurred after he finished a week of engagements in his home country, where he also saw his father, King Charles, for the first time in 19 months.
On September 10, the pair had tea for nearly an hour at the king’s longtime London home, Clarence House, the Daily Mail reported on September 11.
At a reception for the Invictus Games following the reunion, a reporter asked how his father was, per People. Harry replied, “Yes, he’s great, thank you.”
