Pete Davidson Recalls Being a ‘Big Drug Addict,’ Says Smoking Weed Gave Him ‘Psychosis’

Pete Davidson is opening up about his struggles with addiction.

During an appearance on Power 105.1 FM’s The Breakfast Club on Wednesday, August 13, the Bupkis star, 31, shed light on his past drug use — and the surprising negative effect that smoking weed had on his mental health.

“I was a daily, all day sorta guy and I got psychosis where you hear voices, and you feel like you’re sitting next to yourself,” Davidson said on the radio show. “Weed isn’t supposed to do that… it’s because it’s too strong.”

Marijuana wasn’t his only vice. In the interview, the Saturday Night Live alum — who previously revealed to Variety that he’d “been in and out of mental health facilities” since he was 9 years old — went on to admit that he struggled with substance abuse throughout his 20s before eventually cleaning up his act.

“I was a big drug addict — I would go to rehab and stuff, and I do have mental stuff, and I was in therapy, but if you’re a drug addict, none of that works,” he recalled. “You can’t go to therapy on a bunch of drugs and expedite it to work.”

“[It] got a little out of control fast, and I was really young,” he confessed.

“I’m glad all the bad, crazy stuff happened in my 20s,” Davidson continued. “I’m glad I got it out of the way, but it’s tough when you’re young and doing that. I’m jealous of people who blow up when they’re 35 because they have a full life, they have their family, they have their friends, and they know who they are as people.”

As Star previously reported, the comedian announced that he’s expecting his first child with girlfriend Elsie Hewitt, 29.

“Pete’s been wanting to have a kid for a long while now, and now his dream is coming true,” a source said at the time. “He and Elsie are a perfect pair. They get along so well.”
