Maggie Gyllenhaal‘s Gothic Film ‘The Bride!’ Brings New Life to Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’

A century after he was created, Dr. Frankenstein’s monster (Christian Bale), lonely and desperate for a companion, travels to 1930s Chicago where he implores a mad scientist (Annette Bening) to create a bride for him. She obliges by reanimating the corpse of a woman (Jessie Buckley) who was murdered by gangsters.

The lovers then embark on a Bonnie-and-Clyde–esque crime spree to avenge her homicide. Director Maggie Gyllenhaal leans into Frankenstein author Mary Shelley’s feminist tenets in this beautiful, highly stylized film…. you’ll definitely want to say I do to The Bride!
