Royally confused!
Months after stepping in to walk Meghan Markle down the aisle, King Charles III was still scratching his head over her estrangement from dad Thomas Markle, according to author Tom Bower.
“He had never really understood her or what she wanted,” the British journalist wrote in his 2022 tell-all, Revenge: Meghan, Harry And The War Between The Windsors.
However, things took an especially tense turn when Meghan and Prince Harry visited Charles, 77, at Castle of Mey in Caithness, Scotland, towards the end of summer 2018.
As reported by the Daily Mail, the irritated father-in-law allegedly “berated” his son and demanded Meghan visit Thomas to end the retired TV lighting director’s then-recent spate of embarrassing interviews — including one with Mail on Sunday, where he threatened to “unload” on the royal family after being cut off from his daughter.

“They want me to be silent, they want me to just go away,” the 81-year-old — who’d previously admitted to staging paparazzi photos — said, per Business Insider. “But I won’t be silenced.”
Bower reports that Meghan’s in-laws were actually urging for a reconciliation, though — and the Duchess of Sussex, 44, refused over privacy concerns that the Revenge author claims were “untrue.”

The confrontation-laden family trip to Scotland ironically “was used to brief the media that Charles had become attached to Meghan,” Bower noted (via Newsweek). “Unspoken was Charles’ bewilderment about the American.”
Less than two years later, Meghan and Harry, 41, would announce they were leaving royal life behind and moving to the United States.
