The 77-year-old king issued a letter on Monday, September 7, to senior officials across the U.K. government to inform everyone that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain non-working members of the royal family despite their recent return to Britain.
While a spokesperson for Harry, 41, and Meghan, 45, told the BBC that the couple was “a little surprised” to not get more of a heads up on the matter, royal author Robert Jobson told the Daily Mail on Tuesday, September 8, it was important Charles made things crystal clear.
“It has only been a couple of weeks since the Duke and Duchess returned to Britain but already there were reports of Meghan planning to do charity work and Harry taking on military commitments — as pseudo royals,” he told the publication. “It seemed a kind of mission creep.”
According to the Associated Press, the letter was sent by Lord Chamberlain, the most senior official in the royal household, to other senior officials.
“To help avoid doubt or confusion, The King has directed that (this) information be shared,” the letter reportedly stated.

Jobson told the Mail it was “important for the King to clarify that nothing has changed with regard to the Duke and Duchess and that — at their own elective choice — they became and remain private individuals and not working royals.”
Though the Spare author and the former Suits star seemed to be put off by His Majesty’s letter, as has been widely reported in the press, Jobson said people shouldn’t “expect to see anything similar coming from the palace.”
“The King has no intention of being drawn into responding further,” he stated. “He very pointedly made this clarification via the Lord Chamberlain to relevant individuals and bodies rather than in the form of a briefing to the media.”
“The very last thing he will be minded to do in the light of their briefing a reaction to the media is to respond in kind. So there won’t be any war of words, if you will,” Jobson stated. “The King has made his position clear and will now draw a line under it.”
Meghan and Harry — who made the decision to step down from their senior royal duties in 2020 and move to California — shocked the world when it was recently revealed they were moving back to the United Kingdom with the children.
While the couple and their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, are beginning to settle into their new life, it is unclear where exactly they are living. However, it is widely believed that the Sussexes are settling down in the Cotswolds.
