Hayden Panettiere has revealed that her daughter, Kaya — who hasn’t lived with her since 2018 — uses a surprising nickname for her, rather than “mom” or even “Hayden.”
The Scream actress, 36, sat down with host Gayle King on the Monday, May 18 episode of CBS Mornings to discuss her new book, This Is Me: A Reckoning, and the conversation turned to her daughter.
“I’m so blessed to have a great relationship with her. I fly over there as much as I can. I’m on FaceTime with her all the time. She’s now 11 years old and she’s calling mommy more and more,” the actress shared of the 11-year-old, who lives in Ukraine with her father and Panettiere’s ex-fiancé, Wladimir Klitschko.
“She actually called me, they stunned me the other day and she calls me Britney,” added the Heroes alum.

“She goes, ‘Hey, Britney.’ And I was like, it took me a second and I realized she was talking about Bring It On,’’ explained Panettiere, referring the 2006 film, Bring It On: All or Nothing, which was the third installment in the teen movie franchise. “Because her friends are fans of Bring It On.”
She noted that her daughter even wants her mom to video call with her friends to talk about the movie.
“I’m cool now,” she added.
Panettiere relinquished custody of Kaya in 2018 amid an ongoing struggle with substance abuse and her mental health. Speaking on the May 11 episode of Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, she opened up about the decision as well as accusations she abandoned her daughter.
The Nashville alum explained that the decision came after her daughter had spent time in Ukraine and built a life there, while traveling back to America to see her mom was becoming difficult.
“She had spent a lot of time over there. She had family, she had friends, she had extracurricular activities…. She already had a beautiful life and she understood the languages and was starting to speak them,” Panettiere revealed. “So, by the time I finally got healthy, I felt like it would have been unfair of me to and selfish of me to try to pull her out, away from this life that she had created.”
