Britney Spears checked herself into rehab voluntarily, a rep for the singer confirmed.
According to People, the pop star’s rep said on Sunday, April 12, that the 44-year-old entered a treatment facility five weeks after she was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol (DUI) in Ventura, California, on March 4.
“This was her own choice,” a source told Page Six following the news.
“This isn’t about one substance in particular, it has a dual purpose,” the source continued. “This is about Britney putting her mental health first and taking some time for herself to focus on the things that are important to her.”
“She’s dedicated to working on her health,” the insider said. “This is something she really wants to do for herself. This was her own decision.”
Spears’ family — including her sons, Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19, whom she shares with ex-husband Kevin Federline, 48 — are said to be supportive of her decision.
“Everyone just wants Britney to be healthy and in a good place and the fact that this was her decision just proves how dedicated she is to her own recovery and getting herself back on solid ground,” said Page Six‘s source.

The insider added that the “Toxic” singer “doesn’t know yet” how long she might be in rehab for.
“This isn’t for a set 30 or 60-day program,” the source claimed. “It will take as long as she needs. She’s not setting a limit on herself. She just wants to feel better and get herself into a healthier space.”
Sources also told TMZ that Spears’ friends recently encouraged her to check into a rehab facility, with one insider claiming, “She realizes she hit rock bottom.”
Following Spears’ arrest last month, she was reportedly released from jail around 6 a.m. on March 5 and transported to the hospital that same morning to have her blood drawn after being pulled over. It was widely reported that Spears was believed to be under the influence of a “combination of drugs and alcohol” at the time.
As she checks into rehab, “She knows strategically this will look good in front of the judge — that she’s taking it seriously,” said a TMZ source.
As Starpreviously reported, Spears’ recent DUI arrest seemed to be a wake-up call.
“Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in a long-overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life,” her rep told Star at the time. “Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”
“Her boys are going to be spending time with her,” the rep added. “Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well-being.”
