Al Roker Celebrates 30 Years on the ‘Today’ Show, Reveals Whether He’s Ready to Retire

Al Roker isn’t going anywhere.

On Tuesday, January 27, the weatherman, 71, celebrated his 30th anniversary on the Today show — with many more years to hopefully come.

“Well, let’s put it this way. I haven’t thought about retirement,” he confessed in a new interview with People. “Somebody at NBC, that might be a different story.”

“I love what I do. I feel good. I love this job. I love doing it,” Roker continued. “At some point I guess I won’t be, but I don’t feel like that’s anytime soon, so I’m just gonna keep going.”

Change is, of course, an inevitable part of life.

When Roker joined the Today show back in 1996, he replaced the late Willard Scott.

“Look, the fact of the matter is we are each temporary custodians of this legacy,” the meteorologist told People. “At some point I won’t be part of the show, somebody else will be, but to be part of a pretty cool club is very special.”

Over the past three decades, Roker has also gotten the chance to interview everyone from then-President Barack Obama to Betty White and Ed Sheeran.

“To say that this was a dream job isn’t really accurate because it never dawned on me that I could be on the Today show,” he admitted to People.

When the day comes for him to finally retire from the morning news, Roker has already envisioned the legacy he hopes to leave behind.

“People, when they watch, that they didn’t feel like I wasted their time,” he shared. “And that hopefully they felt better after watching than before.”
