Mac Miller has died today, September 7. According to reports, the rapper suffered from an apparent drug overdose in Los Angeles.
Just yesterday Vulture released a long profile of the rapper where he spoke about his tumultuous year. The author of the piece noted on Twitter after the news broke that he had to Mac just yesterday. His latest album, Swimming, was released this August and peaked at number three on the Billboard chart.
Mac had been dating Ariana Grande until this May. They first went public with their relationship in 2016.
Ariana spoke about their split on Instagram at the time. She wrote, “This is one of my best friends in the whole world and favorite people on the planet. I respect and adore him endlessly and am grateful to have him in my life in any form, at all times regardless of how our relationship changes or what the universe holds for each of us!”
Shortly after their breakup, the rapper was arrested for a DUI and hit and run accident. While allegedly drunk, he crashed his Mercedes into a power pole. When fans blamed Ariana for the accident, she said they had a “toxic relationship.” His drinking and drug use were allegedly big factors in their breakup.
After news of her quickie engagement to Pete Davidson, Mac called their split “strange,” but added, “I am happy for her and moving forward with her life just as I’m sure she is with me.”
Mac was born in Pittsburgh in 1992. He was raised Jewish and began rapping at 14.
