Skillful race car driving is about more than just speed – safety plays a huge role as well!
MAZDA professional race car driver Tristan Nunez teamed up with Cooper Tires, to advocate the importance of driver safety on the road.
“I often feel safer when I’m on the race track than when I’m driving on the highway,” said 20-year-old Tristan. “Race car drivers are highly focused on safety and operating our cars with the utmost care, which is critical at the speeds we run.”
The Dnt txt n drV Foundation founder feels it’s important to spread awareness to everyday drivers – especially teens – with the hope that, armed with the right information, they’ll adopt the same focus as a pro, while saving lives in the process.
One sobering fact shared on the foundations website, is that a person takes their eyes off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, in order to send a text – that’s the equivalent of driving the length of a football field at 55 mph – blind!
In support of this critical initiative, Tristan was happy to share a few simple safety tips, to help keep young people focused on the road while driving:
Turn off your phones and keep them out of sight to avoid the temptation to use it. Appoint a “designated texter”.
Keep your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road at all times. No eating, radio dialing or makeup application!
No texting pals when you know they’re driving, and just as important, speak up! Call out your friend or family member if they’re operating a motor vehicle while distracted.
Tristan also had a few important tire safety tips that every driver could use:
Always keep your tires at the proper pressure, ensure your treads are up to par and not bare, and remember to maintain their overall condition with regular maintenance.
