Over the past several months, Miley Cyrus has made headlines for her revealing fashion choices, wild performances and personal life. Still, the 21-year-old’s parents have stood by her and supported the decisions she’s made as an artist.

Star caught up with Billy Ray Cyrus at the 22nd Annual Movieguide Awards on Fri., Feb. 7, where he told us what it’s like to be Miley’s father — and more!

What are you working on right now?

I just came out with a new single called Hope Is Just Ahead and it’s really about staying strong in your faith and believing that you’re worth something. I’m a strong believer that we were all put down on this earth for a reason, and I want to make sure to spread that message while I’m here.

How does it feel to be the father of Hollywood’s hottest pop star?

Of course, I’m proud of her and her success. She works hard everyday and her mind is just always working, always thinking, always creating. She’s a true artist and it’s in her DNA. She was born to be a performer and she’s really done a great job of it.

What is the most important piece of advice you’ve given to Miley?

Miley is a smart young woman and knows exactly what she’s doing. She’s always had a passion for music and the art of creating it, so my advice was to just stay true to yourself and she’s done nothing but that. People talk and people either love what she does, or they hate it, but she is staying true to herself and as her dad I couldn’t ask for anything more.
