Is John Mayer's New Song About Taylor Swift?

John Mayer released his new song “Paper Doll” on YouTube last night, and it’s… interesting. The video shares the words to the tune, with viral YouTube “Prancersiser” Joanna Rohrback dancing in the background.

Although the “prancersising” is a little distracting, it’s hard not to notice that the lyrics seem to be about John’s ex-girlfriend, Taylor Swift. The two dated from late 2009 to early 2010, and Taylor, although she’s never flat out admitted it, has written at least two songs about John. The country/pop singer’s tunes left us with some harsh thoughts about John, and now he might just be responding with some of his own!

The song opens with the lyrics, “Paper doll come try it on, step out of that black chiffon”, which could allude to Taylor’s black chiffon dress at the 2009 Grammy awards when the two allegedly first started dating.

Later on, the chorus in starts, “You’re like 22 girls in one, and none of them know what they’re running from.” Here, the number 22 seems to be an obvious shout out to Taylor, and her hit single “22”.

But the biggest connection is John’s direct response to Taylor’s song “Dear John”, where she sings, “You paint me a blue sky and go back and turn it to rain”. John, in the final verse of “Paper Dolls,” sings, “Someone’s gonna paint you another sky,” possibly letting Taylor know that it’ll be a different guy that will show her happiness.

John further defends accusations of being a bad boyfriend to Taylor by singing, “Sure was fun being good to you”. Hmm… maybe John wasn’t the monster Taylor painted him to be?!

Check out the entire lyric video to hear the rest of his heartfelt song.
