It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth‘s breakup has been a long time coming. Although the stars’ reps only confirmed the split earlier this month, the “Wrecking Ball” singer reveals in a new interview that she wanted to end things way back in February.
“I wrote it while I was working on Valentine’s Day,” she says, of the tune “Drive” from her upcoming album Bangerz. “Emotionally, it was such a hard time. It’s about needing to leave someone, but not wanting to completely cut yourself off from the relationship. It’s a time when you want to leave, but you can’t. It’s also about moving on.”
The exes had been facing breakup rumors since around the time Miley mentions, however, she continued to wear her engagement ring, and even attended the premiere of Liam’s film Paranoia in August. After the 20-year-old’s VMA performance, though, Liam was reportedly ready to end things for good.
Regardless, Miley still defends what she did on stage that night, which still has everybody talking. “I could have guessed what a lot of artists would have done that night,” she explains. “The reaction to what I did has been insane. I think it was a breath of fresh air! For the people that don’t get it, you weren’t meant to.”
