It’s probably best if Zac Efron sticks to acting rather than songwriting. The 26-year-old obviously has some musical experience (hello, High School Musical and Hairspray!), but the birthday song he wrote for Ellen DeGeneres proves he probably needs some help from his pal Taylor Swift to construct an original song.
Still, let’s give the That Awkward Moment star credit where it’s due — he did learn how to play a new tune on the guitar just to serenade the funny talk show host. “I kind of thought, like, what do you give somebody on their birthday that kind of has everything like you do,” he explained of his gift.
The song ended up just being him saying “happy birthday, Ellen” repeatedly, but that’s probably just because most of his focus was on getting the chords right! Check it out:
This isn’t the first time Zac has sung on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Nearly two years ago, the actor appeared on the daytime talk show with Taylor to promote their film The Lorax, and he showed off what he learned in a guitar lesson from the “Red” singer. Together, they made up a funny tune about Ellen.
And, by the way — it’s adorable.
