If your group chat has been arguing about it for months, it’s finally time to settle the debate at the grill.
Beginning March 1, Johnsonville’s first-of-its-kind Dr Pepper® Inspired Sausage officially hit retailers nationwide, turning one of the internet’s most polarizing food rumors into a real-life bite. The mashup, inspired by Dr Pepper’s iconic 23-flavor blend, has already sparked everything from genuine curiosity to playful doomsday jokes. But whether you’re skeptical or sold, one thing is certain: people are talking.
The launch arrives at a moment when Americans are, ironically, spending less time together. According to Johnsonville’s annual National Temperature Check, conducted by The Harris Poll, 73 percent of Americans say they’re hanging out less than they used to, and 51 percent agree that socializing feels more uncomfortable now. Still, 76 percent believe getting out of their comfort zone is good for them — and a near-universal 91 percent agree that delicious food makes hanging out more fun.
If anything can break the ice, it might be a fizzy-inspired sausage.
“Johnsonville and Dr Pepper® are built for hangouts, and our data continues to show people are connecting less,” said Jamie Schmelzer, Vice President of Marketing at Johnsonville. “So, we got together and made something fun, unexpected and maybe delicious? Reaction to the idea of a soda-inspired sausage has been a little polarized, but we hope people hang out, give it a try and let us know what they think, love ’em or hate ’em.”
The flavor concept isn’t as random as it sounds. Dr Pepper’s 23-flavor blend has long been used in marinades and barbecue sauces, lending a subtle sweetness and complexity to meats. Johnsonville worked closely with the soda brand to translate that profile into sausage form, resulting in what they’re calling a “sweet and salty – or SWALTY – finish.”
“At Dr Pepper®, we’re always looking for bold, delicious ways to show up in fans’ lives, and this collaboration with Johnsonville takes that to a whole new level,” said Derek Dabrowski, SVP of Brand Marketing at Dr Pepper®. “Our signature 23-flavors has been used in home kitchens and backyard BBQs for years, so transforming that iconic taste into a sausage felt both unexpected and completely natural.”
Available in both fully cooked and uncooked varieties, the sausage is designed for experimentation. Think smoky barbecue sauces, stone-ground mustard, hot honey, caramelized onions or grilled peppers — the kind of toppings that amplify the subtle sweetness rather than overpower it. It’s as suited to a backyard cookout as it is to a tailgate roller grill or even a bold weeknight dinner.
You’ll find it at Walmart, Kroger, 7-Eleven and other retailers nationwide.
Is it culinary innovation or chaos in casing form? That’s up to you, but a conversation-starting sausage might be exactly what the party needed.
