Capitale: Where New York’s Celebrity Circuit Comes to Life

The guest list is usually the first clue. When a room quietly fills with A-list musicians, award-winning actors, designers, and media power players, without much announcement, you know you’ve landed somewhere that matters. In New York, that place is often Capitale.

Located at 130 Bowery inside the former Bowery Savings Bank, Capitale has long operated as a kind of gravitational center for celebrity culture. Not loud about it, not overly curated, just consistently the room where the right people show up. The 1893 Beaux-Arts space, designed by Stanford White, brings a sense of scale that feels almost cinematic: soaring ceilings, carved marble, and towering Corinthian columns that instantly elevate whatever is happening inside.

Over time, that atmosphere has attracted an unmistakable roster of talent. Justin Timberlake, Alicia Keys, Kanye West, Chris Rock, Maroon 5, and Sting have all moved through the space, joined by icons like Angelina Jolie, Anne Hathaway, Elton John, and Mariah Carey, each appearance reinforcing Capitale’s status as a true celebrity stronghold. It’s less about who has been there once, and more about the consistency of who continues to return.

Music has played a particularly strong role in shaping Capitale’s cultural presence. Lil’ Kim filmed her “The Jump Off” video within its walls, while Ludacris chose the venue for the cover of The Red Light District. In a moment that extended far beyond New York, Jay-Z broadcast a Super Bowl performance from Capitale alongside the Rutgers University Orchestra, merging historic architecture with national spectacle. It’s this ability to operate both intimately and on a massive scale that sets the venue apart.

But what happens inside Capitale isn’t limited to performances; it’s the crowd itself that defines the experience. High-profile after-parties, including those tied to the MTV Video Music Awards, have transformed the space into a late-night convergence point for celebrities like Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry, and Britney Spears. These aren’t typical nightlife scenes, they’re extensions of major cultural moments, where the industry gathers after the cameras stop rolling.

Capitale’s presence in film and television has only reinforced its status. The venue has appeared in Billions, Sex and the City, Girls, The Apprentice, Top Chef, and The Real Housewives, among others. In Sex and the City, it served as both a backdrop and a symbol, hosting a memorable scene as well as the series’ finale celebration. On screen, Capitale represents a certain version of New York: elevated, dramatic, and undeniably social.

The theater world has adopted it in much the same way. Following major Broadway premieres, Capitale often becomes the unofficial second act. In 2023, it hosted the opening celebration for Shucked, and on March 23, 2026, it welcomed the after-party for the Broadway premiere of GIANT. These events bring together actors, producers, stylists, and cultural insiders in a setting that mirrors the importance of the night itself.

What makes Capitale especially relevant today is its ability to exist outside of trends. While newer venues come and go, often built around a specific aesthetic or crowd, Capitale remains flexible, capable of hosting fashion, media, music, and philanthropic events without ever feeling over-defined. It attracts different worlds and allows them to overlap naturally.

That flexibility is grounded in a much older history. Before it became a celebrity destination, the building functioned as a civic landmark, hosting events like the Children’s Hospital Benefit organized by Dr. Lee Tompkins. Officially designated a New York City landmark in 1966, the structure stands as one of the clearest examples of Beaux-Arts design influenced by the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. The weight of that history is part of what gives the space its authority.

Now, following its recent reopening under proprietor Ilya Zavolunov, Capitale is stepping back into its role at the center of New York’s social and cultural life. “Capitale has always been a room where culture happens naturally,” Zavolunov says. “What we’re doing now is reintroducing that energy for a new generation, bringing back the kind of nights where the guest list matters, the room feels alive, and you know you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.”

In a city where visibility is everything, Capitale continues to function as a kind of filter. Not everyone gets in, and not every room matters. This one does.
