When it comes to Britney Spears’ life, the pop princess wants to remain in the driver’s seat.
Though the “Gimme More” singer, 44, was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence last week, a Monday, March 9, report in journalist Rob Shuter’s Naughty But Nice Substack claimed that Spears wants to continue living autonomously.
“Yes, she could easily afford a chauffeur,” a source told Shuter. “But Britney doesn’t want to be driven. She wants to drive. It’s not about money — it’s about freedom.”
The Grammy Award winner was notably placed under a controversial conservatorship in 2008, leading to the #FreeBritney movement, so after it was dissolved in 2021, the little things in life — like driving — are important to Spears.
“She couldn’t go outside when she wanted,” a source pointed out. “There were times she wasn’t allowed to close her bedroom door or even take a bath privately.”
Before the conservatorship ended, “she felt trapped,” said one of Shuter’s sources. “Driving became symbolic of everything she wasn’t allowed to do.”
While one insider admitted that Spears is “not a great driver and never has been,” they explained: “Britney loves driving. To her, it represents freedom.”

Spears was reportedly released from jail around 6 a.m. on Thursday, March 5, and the mother of two was transported to the hospital that same morning to have her blood drawn after being pulled over.
The “Circus” singer is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court on May 4.
A representative for the singer previously told Star that “hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life,” calling it an “unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable.”
“Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law,” the rep said. “Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”
“Her boys are going to be spending time with her,” the rep added of sons Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19, whom she shares with ex-husband Kevin Federline. “Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being.”
