Ashley Judd celebrated her 58th trip around the sun by restaging her 12th birthday party — and while doing so, she took the opportunity to look back on her childhood and what may have been missing.

“Many of us grew up with unmet needs…I don’t remember any of my birthdays growing up,” the actress shared via Instagram on Tuesday, May 12, alongside a series of photos from her recent celebration. “I do remember loving some elements of Mrs. Minor’s 6th grade class at Grassland Elementary in 1979: science, geology, dinosaurs with their hilarious tiny arms and giant mouths eating leaves from treetops.”

In a subtle critique of her late mother, Naomi Judd, Ashley added, “But at home? There was no parent (or adult) supporting, nurturing, guiding and reinforcing my learning, delighting in, or protecting that little girl.”

Naomi — who shared Ashley with ex-husband Michael C. Ciminelladied by suicide at age 76 in April 2022.

Ashley detailed her painful childhood, marked with sexual abuse and neglect in her 2011 memoir, All That is Bitter & Sweet.

“I was taught to believe that our lifestyle was normal and never to question it or complain, even when I was left alone for hours, sometimes days at a time, or when I was passed without warning to yet another relative,” she wrote, adding: “There was always marijuana inside the house.”

In Lifetime’s May 2025 documentary, The Judd Family: Truth Be Told, Ashley opened up about her last moments with her mother, saying that Naomi explained to her why she “continued to live” despite her battles with mental health.

“One of the things she said was me, and I said, ‘You don’t have to worry about me, Mom. I’m okay. I’m okay.’ And she really clocked that in a really deep way,” Ashley recalled. “When she died, my most earnest wish was to make sure that she was relieved and absolved of her guilt and her shame. I was holding her hand. I was kissing her. She was so soft. She smelled so pretty.”

Now, Ashley admits in her birthday Instagram post, “It is safe for me to feel the innocence of the childhood I always deserved.”
