Angelina Jolie Publicly Shows Her Mastectomy Scars To ‘Encourage’ Fans to ‘Make Informed Choices’

Angelina Jolie has shared a look at the results of her double mastectomy in the hopes of spreading awareness about breast cancer treatment and prevention.

The Oscar winner, 50, did a cover shoot and interview with Time France in which she opened up about her medical journey, as well as her new movie, Couture — a deeply personal movie about a filmmaker with breast cancer.

“I share these scars with many women I love. And I’m always moved when I see other women share theirs,” she said of her decision to show her scars in the upcoming December 18, 2025 issue of Time France. “I wanted to join them, knowing that Time France would be sharing information about breast health, prevention and knowledge about breast cancer.”

The actress previously revealed she underwent a double mastectomy in 2013 in an opinion piece for The New York Times in which she revealed doctors discovered she had a genetic issue called BRCA1, which significantly increased her risk of breast cancer to roughly 87 percent. At the time, Jolie had both breasts surgically removed and says her odds then dropped to roughly five percent.

Now, the Maleficent star is advocating for women everywhere to get similar access to potentially life-saving tests and screenings.

“Every woman should always be able to determine her own healthcare journey and have the information she needs to make informed choices: genetic testing and screening should be accessible and affordable for women with clear risk factors or a significant family history,” she shared in her interview with Time France. “When I shared my experience in 2013, it was to encourage informed choices.”

“Healthcare decisions must be personal, and women must have the information and support they need to make those choices,” she added. “Access to screening and care should not depend on financial resources or where someone lives.”
