She may have missed out on an Oscar nomination for her recent film Maria, but there’s no question that Angelina Jolie is considered one of the greatest movie stars of her generation.

So it comes as a surprise that the 49-year-old — the daughter of Hollywood legend Jon Voight — didn’t always aspire to be an actress. “I did it in the beginning because it was my mother’s dream,” Angelina recently confessed of her mom, Marcheline Bertrand, who died in 2007.

The pair were unusually close and struggled financially after Jon left the family. “My mom was my manager, and we were a team,” Angie said of those early years. “I always wanted to buy her a house, and I started to pay the bills.”

Her own kids won’t feel the same pressure. The mom of six has involved her children in some aspects of her work, but, she recently said, “None of my children want to be in front of the camera [at] this time.”
