‘American Idol’ Alum Scotty McCreery Is ‘Absolutely Broken’ After Losing Both Grandmas On Same Day

Scotty McCreery has just experienced an unimaginable heartbreak as both of his grandmothers passed away on the same day.

On Thursday, July 10, the country singer, who won Season 10 of American Idol, took to Instagram to announce the devastating news to his followers.

McCreery, 31, posted a photo from his wedding day with his two grandmas and wife, writing in the caption, “My heart is absolutely broken. Yesterday, both my Grandma Janet and my Grandma Paquita passed away. I think I am still in a bit of shock as I type this, but I’m choosing to remember the great memories we all made with both of them.”

“There really are too many to count. From being on the farm in Elizabeth City or visiting the Outer Banks with Grandma Janet.. And then the incredible memories we made at the backyard pool in Pinehurst, all the way to visiting Puerto Rico with Grandma Paquita,” he recalled. “Both of them truly taught me what love is all about. I will miss them dearly. If yall could keep my family in your prayers I’d appreciate it.”

Friends in the music industry, including his fellow former American Idol contestants, took to the comment section to share their love and condolences with McCreery.

“Sending so much love and prayer your way,” runner-up Lauren Alaina commented.

“Sending love to you & your families, Scotty 💓,” Haley Reinhart, who came in third place on McCreery’s season, wrote.

“Praying for all of your family 🧡 I’m so sorry, Scotty, that is unfathomable loss in one day,” singer Caylee Hammack penned. “Sending all my love to you & your wonderful family!”

The Academy of Country Music Awards winner’s mother, Judy, also made a post on her Facebook page on Thursday, sharing details about how the two women died.

“My precious mom, age 85, passed away yesterday at WakeMed, shortly after 1pm. She had been battling norovirus & the flu, which led to dehydration and pneumonia,” Judy wrote in part. “We also lost Mike’s mom, Paquita, yesterday, a few hours later at 4pm. She was 93 and had been in declining health.”

McCreery was just 17 years old when he took home the Idol trophy in 2011 during season 10 of the hit singing competition series. He went on to have significant success in the music industry, with many of his songs topping the country charts.

In 2018, McCreery tied the knot with his girlfriend Gabi Dugal. They welcomed their son in October 2022 and revealed this past May that they are expecting another little one in the fall.
