With a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the upcoming Academy Awards, the next few weeks were set to be a time of celebration and award night prep for Julia Roberts. Of course, all of that changed when the actress’ world was rocked by her half-sister, Nancy Motes’, unexpected death of an apparent drug overdose on Feb. 9.
Following the tragedy, Julia canceled her appearance at the Academy Awards’ Nominees Luncheon on Feb. 10, as well as at Jimmy Kimmel Live later that day.
“The family is both shocked and devastated,” the Oscar winner’s family said in a statement.
Julia and her sister had a rocky relationship, and in an interview last summer, Nancy detailed how the 46-year-old’s disapproval of her weight inspired her gastric bypass surgery. “When I was in high school…She would let me know that I was overweight…in a not-so-nice manner,” she revealed at the time.
Nancy was just 37-years-old.
