Controversy or not, it looks like viewers are slowly losing interest in the Duck Dynasty phenomenon. Following Phil Robertson’s controversial comments, the show returned to respectable ratings on Jan. 15, but Season 5’s second episode had a major drop in viewers — nearly 2 million less people tuned in!
Although 6.7 million viewers is a fine showing, especially for a cable show, in comparison to last week’s 8.5 million, it’s pretty disappointing. Compare that to Season 4’s premiere in August, which was watched by nearly 11.8 million people, and the decline is even more obvious.
After the family’s patriarch compared homosexuality to bestiality in a GQ interview, A&E suspended him from filming. However, when the Robertson family stood by him and threatened to leave the network, the ban was lifted.
