With the support of his family and community behind him, Phil Robertson is not backing down from the anti-gay comments he made in GQ last week. While leading a Bible study group over the weekend, the Duck Dynasty star defended his opinion for the first time, saying, “I will not give up or back off from my path.”
“I love all men and women,” he added. “I am a lover of humanity, not a hater.”
While addressing the group for around 45 minutes, the family patriarch continue to stand by his views on homosexuality. “Sexual sins are numerous and many,” he said. “I have a few myself. So what is your safest course of action? If you’re a man, find yourself a woman, marry them, and keep your sex right there.”
He explained that, during the GQ interview, he was simply quoting the Bible. “I am just reading what was written over 2,000 years ago,” he shared. “Those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom. All I did was quote from scriptures, but they just didn’t know it. Whether I said it or they read it, what’s the difference? The sins are the same, humans haven’t changed.”
Following Phil’s remarks, he was suspended from filming Duck Dynasty indefinitely by A&E. However, his family (and costars) have stood by his side, and released a statement saying they could not imagine continuing the show without their patriarch. No word yet on any agreement between the cast and network.
